What's Up With Atheism On The Internet?

I'm not bashing on Atheism or Atheists in general, but what is up with going on internet forums and when somebody says they're an avid Christian and they read the Bible and believe in Jesus they get bashed by a bunch of people saying "God isn't real" or countless other hate comments. Is Atheism the new "hip" thing or is it just "hip" to bash someone who practices religion and believes in God(s)? Has Atheism become a fun past time to make fun of somebody like dissing someone for being gay or fat?
